What to do with Lithuanian Books left in your care
As more of the older generation pass on, people are asking what to do with the Lithuanian books left in their care. These days more and more people are accessing books digitally and very few of those of Lithuanian descent born in Australia will read books in Lithuanian.
So what do you do with the books?
The Federal Executive of the Australian Lithuanian Community Association has been in touch with the Lithuanian Council of Public Libraries Association. They have suggested that those with the books prepare a list of the books that includes the following information:
- author,
- name of the book,
- year of publication,
- publisher,
- place of publication.
The books need to be in good condition. They will then identify any books needed in their libraries and inform us. They will also let us know if there are books of significance on the list that should not be destroyed, this includes books in worse condition.
So what next?
We have raised this matter with the Lithuanian community presidents.
After your list is prepared we ask that you present the list to your Lithuanian community committee so they can pass it on to Federal Executive.
These lists will then be sent to the association in Lithuania who in turn will inform us of the books that are needed.
This list could also change over time. The family that wants to part with the books will then be informed of the list of required books. It will be up to those with the books to then organise for their shipment to Lithuania. This may change with some collection point in cities where there can be a repository held.
A decision was made to do this via the Federal Executive at this stage in order to develop a central list of books that are required and a list of those that are not required and not worth keeping. The list and its updates will be shared with all communities so that they can share it with those that need it. Overtime the process for this will be refined and improved.

KĄ DARYTI SU LIETUVIŠKOMIS KNYGOMIS?
Kai vis daugiau lietuvių iškeliauja iš šio pasaulio, jų artimieji klausia ką daryti su jų paliktom senom lietuviškom knygom? Šiais laikais vis daugiau žmonių skaito knygas internete ir vis mažiau skaito knygas lietuviškai, ypač tie, kurie gimė Australijoje. Bendruomenės skundžiasi, kad knygos dažnai atnešamos ir paliekamos jų bendruomenių, bibliotekų patalpose ar kitur. Tai tampa didele papildoma našta mūsų bibliotekoms ir bendruomenėms. Ką tuomet daryti su knygomis? Viena galimybė paskelbti individualias knygas per socialinius tinklus. Krašto Valyba susisiekė su Lietuvos Savivaldybių Viešųjų Bibliotekų Asociacija (LSVBA). Siūlymas iš jų yra, kad tie, kurie nori atiduoti knygas, paruoštų jų sąrašą. Knygos turi būti gerame stovi. Reikėtų užrašyti knygos pavadinimą, autorių, metus, kada išleista, kas išleido ir kur išleista. Tuomet jie peržiūrės šį sąrašą ir įvertins ko reikia jų bibliotekoms bei praneš mums. Taip pat pasakys mums, kurios knygos yra reikšmingos ir jų nereikėtų išmesti. Tai kas toliau? Mes esame jau apie tai kalbėję su bendruomenių pirmininkais. Pradžioje sudarytą savo knygų sąrašą perduokite savo bendruomenės valdybai, kuri pristatys jį Krašto Valdybai, o mes išsiųsime jį LSVBA. Pagal mūsų susitarimą LSVBA praneš mums kokios knygos jiems būtų naudingos. (Tai kas jiems pasirodys naudinga, laike taip pat gali keistis.) Tuomet šeima, kuri nori atiduoti knygas, gaus knygų sąrašą, kurios naudingos ir turės pati suorganizuoti knygų persiuntimą į Lietuvą. Nutarta tai daryti per Krašto Valdybą, kad galėtume per laiką vienoje vietoje sudaryti sąrašą tų knygų, kurias verta laikyti ir tų kuriu neverta laikyti. Tuo sąrašu Krašto Valdyba pasidalins su bendruomenių valdybomis, kurios paskelbs jį savo bendruomenių nariams, kuriems tai bus aktualu. Su laiku sieksime patobulinti šį procesą.
